The Celestial Animal Health Exercises
Feng Shui orientations in thehome can be supplementedby simple health exercises developed by the Shaolin and Tai Chi masters to allow the human body to create Chi. Anyone can use these exercises to maintain abalanced physical and emotional state, but if there is a specificproblem affecting an internalorgan, select an exercise according to the five elements theory.
The relaxed dragon
The relaxed dragon exercise helps overcome anger, anxiety, andhostility. Hold the pose as long as you can and repeat several times.
- Stand still with feet apart,shoulder width.
- Take a few deep breaths and visualize yourself as a dragon.
- Bend your knees very slightly, keep your spine very straight, pull your tailbone in.
- Relax your mouth, and let your tongue touch the top of the palate.
Stand like this for as long as you can. The recommended time is half an hour each morning.Your palms will tingle slightly, and after about ten minutes you will feel the Chi moving up your hands. With time and practice the Chi will move down into the tan tien, in the navel area, where it is believed all human Chi is stored.
The breathingdragon
This exercise is the second stage of the dragon exercise. It is alsoexcellent for firing ambition, but in a nonstressful way.
- Stand still, facing east, and think of the dragon.
- Bend your knees slightly and hold your navel with both hands, spine straight, tailbone in.
Breathe in through your nostrils and feel the breath going into the stomach. Very slowly!
- Feel the stomach expand like a drum or balloon.
- When you have breathed as far as you can, bend forward 15°-25°. Breathe out at the same speed as you breathe in, until your stomach feels hollow.
- Straighten. This is one cycle of breath. Do nine cycles!
The flying phoenix
This exercise fights depression and cheers the soul; be aware of the Chi moving even as you do it.
- Stand still, keeping the spinestraight, tailbone in.
- Feet apart, same width as shoulders, your knees slightly bent. Imagine yourself as a phoenix.
- Extend your arms horizontallyas if spreading your wings ready.
- Let your tongue rest gently at the top of your mouth. Hold this pose for as long as you can.
You will feel your palmstingling; this is the Chi slowly gathering energy before moving inward and filling you with a sense of well-being. Hold this pose for about 15 minutes every morning.
The happy phoenix
The happy phoenix exercise is believed to be so good for the health that those who do it faithfully each morning will live for years.
- Stand straight, left leg half a step in front. Feet shoulder-width apart. Knees slightly bent, spine straight, tailbone in.
- Extend both arms straight in front, palms down. Bend from the waist, keeping the spine straight forward and down, slowly, to about 20°, spine still straight. At the same time as you bend forward, let your arms swings back as if you are about to dive.
The Crane Exercise
The red-combed crane is a popular symbol of longevity and the ancients believed the crane’s unique pose gave it its special ability to survive all kinds of diets. They believed the pose stimulated its stomach and internal organs, thereby strengthening the digestive, respiratory and circulatory systems. So the exerciseinvolves standing on one leg.
- Stand with the feet together, toes and heels touching.
- Place the sole of one foot on the opposite calf, then slowly work it up to the inner thigh.
- Raise both hands above your head, inhaling as you do so.
- Join your hands and hold this position for as long as you can.
