The main symbols that can be activated within the home are:

  • Symbols of wealth and success. These symbols include Chinese coins; the sailing ship; the wealth vase; the three-legged toad; the dragon fish, or arrowana; the goldfish; lucky gold calligraphy; the pot of gold; the auspicious red bat.
  • Symbols of longevity. The most popular longevity symbols are the red-topped crane; the everlasting pine tree; the peach of immortality; the deer; Sau, God of Longevity; the bamboo; and the cicada.

Origins of Symbolism

The symbolism of Feng Shui is rich in the imagery of a people steeped in ancient folklore and legends. This is to be expected since the Chinese have a longer recorded history than that of most other civilizations. The stories and legends associated with China’s main symbols of good fortune were handed down by word of mouth.

The grand matriarchs of Chinese households ruled their family residences with an iron rod. Feng Shui dictated the allocation of rooms, and the decor of bedchambers, halls, and receiving rooms. The Current Period of Seven: 1984 through 2003

In Feng Shui, this period is considered to be the period of seven when anything placed in numbers of seven create powerful energy patterns. When placed in the west the potency increases because seven is also the number of the west.Thus, during this period anything hung or displayed in the west part of the home or living room which symbolizes thenumber seven and the element gold will be auspicious. Examples of such symbols of good fortune — dragons, phoenixes, horses, elephants, and so forth — in the color of gold to imitate the metal element will be very lucky when they are placed in the west part of the home. The Most Auspicious Chi Lin

The dragon horse, or the Chinese unicorn, is a fabulous creature of good omen. It is the symbol of longevity, richness, enchantment, illustrious offspring, enormous riches, and great spiritual wisdom. The dragon horse is reputed to be so special a creature that many legends associated with the birth of Confucius and other wise men feature omens associated with it. Some say that Confucius’ mother became pregnant by stepping onto the footsteps of the dragon horse soon after she returned from the mountains where she had undertaken a year-long religious retreat.
