Astrology, the Planetary Movements in Detail (Jupiter, Saturn)

Jupiter

Jupiter takes 12 years to make its return. If you understand natal charting, when trying to interpret this return you will need to take into account the sign and the house that natal Jupiter occupies as well as any planets that aspect Jupiter natally.

If you don’t understand natal charting, then just remember that Jupiter is a bit of a double-edged sword. As you begin to read and learn about astrology, you will soon come to see Jupiter as ‘the great benefic’, or the planet that, along with Venus, bestows all kinds of good things upon its subjects. Alas, this is not quite the case. You may remember reading that the old Roman god Jupiter (or Jove, if you prefer) tossed down thunderbolts from Mount Olympus whenever he was out of sorts. Therefore a Jupiter return can bring some sudden and unpleasant changes into a subject’s life, but the odd thing is that in the long run there is usually something beneficial that comes out of these unpleasant events. If the subject loses something or someone from their life under a Jupiter return, it is probably no bad thing.

It is not difficult to work out that any subject is likely to experience Jupiter returns at the ages of 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72, 84 and 96. These do tend to be lucky years, when nice things happen to us all. At these times, a subject can expect to form good friendships with people who share the same beliefs and outlook on life. They may start a career, find a mate, make a home, give life to a child or find their feet in some way at these times. Greater confidence in themselves and in their deeply felt hopes, wishes and beliefs will carry them through any problems that may arise.

It is also not difficult to see that the Jupiter half-returns occur at the ages of 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78, 80 and 92. These can be times of setback and loss, but, because Jupiter is basically one of the planetary ‘goodies’, this is likely to be really devastating only if other, more important, planetary events are occurring at the same time.

Saturn

This is the planet that all astrologers mutter about darkly, because the Saturn returns at the ages of 29/30 and 57/59 can take a lot of living through. Oddly enough, these hard times can ultimately bring great benefits in their wake, because they set up lessons and challenges which, when grasped, bring terrific rewards. The easiest way to understand Saturn’s effects is to see them in the form of a list. Bear in mind that planets waver in their orbits, so, until you can study each chart in detail, the dates may be a little out of true.

Some help with the terminology

If you remember that astrologers see the signs of the zodiac in terms of a circle around the Earth, the following expressions become easy to understand. When a planet goes around the zodiac and lands back where it started, this is known as a return. Therefore, in the list below, the Saturn return shows those ages when Saturn orbits the Sun (and also all the signs of the zodiac that we see from our standpoint on the Earth) and lands back where it started.

When any planet is in the same place as any other, this is called a conjunction. A square aspect is when a planet is three signs away around the zodiac circle. When looking at an astrological chart, this would be a quarter of the way round the chart, or 90 degrees away. An opposition is six signs away, or 180 degrees away if you prefer. If you are looking at a planet that is half way around the zodiac, and therefore opposite to its natal placement, this is usually called a half-return.

The nicer Saturn aspects, such as the trines and sextiles, are best left until you get further into astrology because they vary in their timing and may not occur at the times that I suggest.
