The Eagle and the Phoenix, Scorpio Connotations
Scorpio’s constellation is impressive in that it actually resemblances its sign, the Scorpio, whereas other constellations are obscure. Probably for this reason, the scorpion is often used to explain the concepts of Scorpio, with a sting in its tail. Scorpio also has two other symbols (it is the only sign with three), the eagle and the phoenix, and these have some interesting connotations.
All three signs are able to conquer their difficult environments with a combination of stealth and intelligence. The phoenix is the Greek name for a mythological bird offered in sacrifice to Ra, God of the Sun, in the ancient Egypt. This bird was similar to an eagle, and possessed golden-red feathers like flames.
Only one phoenix could exist at a time and, according to the legend, it could live anywhere from 500 to 1000 years. At the end of its life, the phoenix built its own mortuary pyre and was consumed by fire. From the ashes, the phoenix was reborn. This cycle was repeated over and over, so that the phoenix was the symbolic representation of the death and rebirth of the Sun.
“Do you not see how necessary a world of pains and troubles is: to school an intelligence and make it a soul?”
John Keats (poet), Scorpio Sun sign, born 31 October 1795
Scorpio is very much concerned with death, birth and rebirth. It is a period of darkness and introspection after the social interaction of Libra. The difference between Libra and her neighbour Scorpio is quite radical. Probably the most pertinent difference is their attitudes to truth. For Libra, the truth is changeable; for Scorpio, the truth is a given, and it is their life’s mission to seek it out. They would never bend the truth to placate someone, but will tell the story as they see it, good or bad, because the truth cannot be tampered with.
“You mustn’t always believe what I say. Questions tempt you to tell lies, particularly when there is no answer.”
Pablo Picasso (artist), Scorpio Sun sign, born 25 October 1881
Scorpios are people of deep faith, whether they are Christian, atheist or something more exotic. They think emotionally and deeply about the meaning of life and this can lead them into the priesthood or a similar vocational profession.
Their natural suspicion can make for torrid relationships. People generally expect to be trusted and can find this behaviour insulting, and this can drive many a good prospect away. Scorpio can see this as a confirmation of their suspicions which only makes them more vigilant next time. Scorpios require solid security without feeling their partner is a doormat. This is a precarious balance that has to be learned by both partners over time. The longer a relationship lasts with a Scorpio the more secure it tends to become.
Scorpios carry the deceits of the past with a hurt as fresh as if it was yesterday. Many an ill-mannered Scorpio has bored a first date to tears with vitriolic stories of his ex- lover. This can turn into full-blown self-pity, and Scorpio can become his own worst enemy.
“We make a ladder of our vices, if we trample those same vices underfoot.”
Saint Augustine (theologian), Scorpio Sun sign, born 13 November
Yet though they can be jealous and possessive, you will not find a more passionate sign in the zodiac.
The Scorpio ego can also be the most resilient in the zodiac. You can neither insult nor compliment a Scorpio to ill or great effect, as Scorpios know their strengths and weaknesses.
To the mere mortals of the other eleven signs, the Scorpio character sounds so sexy and complex and mysterious, and that’s exactly how Scorpio likes it. They are firm believers that familiarity breeds contempt, and they will go out of their way to keep a pocket of themselves veiled in mystery.
They are often called the loners of the zodiac. In fact, they hate being alone, and this misinterpretation of their desire to protect themselves as aloofness is the most heartbreaking part of being a Scorpio. They are a deeply emotional water sign with a great need and desire to partner. You may not be able to insult them, but you can easily break their heart once it has been given to you. The Scorpio is a deeply compassionate sign that can suffer from intense feelings of loneliness.
Scorpio is fixed water, that is, controlled emotion. They tend to dominate in any relationship as this control makes them feel safe. To the world they like to portray themselves as the subservient partner, but they are very much in control, and are not above blackmail and manipulation to keep it that way.
