Here is the three-step method for finding your answer. Of the three steps, the first is the most important. The second step modifies the first, and the third modifies the second.

STEP I

Take the element of your significator line as the subject and the element of the season in which you are asking your question as the transformer. If, for example, the element of the significator line in your hexagram is Water and the element of the season in which you are asking your question is Metal, you have a yes answer, since the table indicates that Metal supports Water. Taking another example, if the element of your significator line is Fire and the element of the season is Metal, you have a no answer, since Metal exhausts Fire.

STEP 2

Take the element of your significator line as the subject and the element of the changing line in your original hexagram as the transformer. For example, if the element of your significator line is Water and you have a changing line whose element is Earth, the changing line threatens your significator line, since Earth kills Water. Taking another example, if the element of your significator line is Water and you have a changing line whose element is Metal, the changing line aids your significator line, since Metal supports Water.

STEP 3

Take the element of the changing line in your original hexagram as the subject and the element of the converted line in your second hexagram as the transformer. Building on the first example in step 2, where the element of the significator line was Water, and the element of the changing line was Earth, let’s suppose that the element of the converted line is Wood. Because the Wood of the converted line kills the Earth of the changing line, the converted line cancels the destructive effect the changing line had on the significator line. If the element of the converted line had supported the element of the changing line, it would have reinforced the destructive power the changing line had over the significator line.

If your significator line is also a changing line, and this does occur from time to time, judge the element of the significator line first against the element of the season and second against the element of the significator’s converted line in the second hexagram. Then, if there are other changing lines in the hexagram, judge the significator line against them.
