Overall Arrangement
The most important points to consider in arranging the workplace are the position of the main office, or CEO’s office, and the ease of movement of personnel and operations. Once the location of the main office is determined, it will be relatively simple to figure out where everything else should go.
Short of considering compass directions, the ideal locations for the CEO’s office are at the power and money points of the overall space. You will recall that the power point is diagonally opposite the main door of the space, and the money point is at the far left-hand corner of the space relative to the main door. If the power and money points coincide, so much the better.
The CEO’s office should never be isolated from the main area of the workplace, or difficult to reach. It should be at the greatest vantage point to all the operations of the business.
Because there is always more than one vantage point in a space, the office of the codirector or other top-ranking executive should be located at a vantage point that complements the location of the CEO’s office. It is always good to position essential personnel within easy reach of the CEO’s office. If it is not possible to have all of the essential personnel together, as in a constellation, the most essential personnel should be given the positions closest to the CEO, while those who are less essential should be farther away. What is most important is that everyone work together smoothly and with a minimum of wasted movement.
If the CEO’s office is not at the money point of the space, the money point can be reserved for various other offices, such as the office of the codirector, the accounting office, the marketing office, the production manager’s office, the conference room, or the presentation room.
Workstations and cubicles should be placed where they are more or less easily accessible to the executive offices. Cubicles located toward the center, or heart, of the space should not have high walls, because it is important to allow the chi to flow as freely as possible around and through the center of the entire space.
Special attention should be given to the reception area. The first impression your space makes on your prospective clients or customers will often determine whether they want to do business with you. The reception room always should be comfortable and decorated to inspire positive feelings about your business. Display such things as pictures that celebrate your line of business, pictures of your prize works, special awards, and so forth. (I know a successful commodities broker in Chicago who has a large poster in his reception room of a pig wearing four sneakers and a reversed baseball cap with the caption “Hogs are trendier than you think.”)
