Feng Shui in Designing and Renovating for Successful Business
This post is addressed to architects, designers, and CEOs who are plan_ fling an office space for an entire company. If you are designing or redesigning a workplace, aim for comfort of movement and simplicity of form. Think of the space as a suit of clothes that either fits, letting people breathe and move comfortably, or doesn’t. Clean, straight lines always promote ease of thought and smooth activity. Geometric patterns in either overall layout or decor embody chi; they are like codes. Some patterns promote movement and positive growth, while others promote stagnation and decay.
The geometric patterns in the design and decor of a workplace should be in harmony with the element of the business. Here are the shapes that relate to the elements ruling various businesses.
- If the business is ruled by the element Water, the most auspicious shapes to include in its design are undulant patterns, circles and ovals, and rectangles. The least favorable shape to emphasize is the square. The worst shape is the triangle.
- If the business is ruled by the element Wood, the most auspicious shapes to include in its design are undulant patterns, rectangles, and possibly triangles. The least favorable shape to emphasize is the square. The worst shapes are circles and ovals.
- If the business is ruled by the element Fire, the most auspicious shapes to include in its design are rectangles, squares, and possibly triangles. The least favorable shapes to emphasize are circles and ovals. The worst shapes are undulant.
- If the business is ruled by the element Earth, the most auspicious shapes to include in its design are squares, circles and ovals, and possibly triangles. The least favorable shapes to emphasize are rectangular. The worst shapes are undulant.
- If the business is ruled by the element Metal, the most auspicious shapes to include in its design are squares, circles and ovals, and undulant patterns. The least favorable shapes to emphasize are rectangles. The worst shape is the triangle.
In all cases where the triangle is indicated as an auspicious possibility, bear in mind that it inspires aggression. The triangle should never be overused; it should be only an embellishment, never a structural element.
Note the oval shape in the design. As you will recall, the design business comes under the element Wood. The reason this design did not work for this firm is that the chi of the oval shape, corresponding to Metal, has a destructive relationship to the Wood element of the design business. Had this been the floor plan for a business ruled by Water, it would have been perfect, since Metal supports Water.
Halls and Doorways
Hallways conduct movement. A hallway that is unusually long and narrow causes chi to rush through like an arrow. To remedy this, place either a series of pictures gallery style on both walls or a series of full-length mirrors at regular intervals along one of the walls.
A hallway that has doors directly facing each other, especially if the hallway is narrow, will give rise to conflicts. Doors in a hallway are most favorably placed at regularly alternating intervals. If your hallway has doors that directly face each other and you don’t want to go to the expense of reconstruction, you can remedy the problem by hanging some brightly colored and interesting or amusing pictures along the walls of the hallway to divert attention.
A hallway whose doors are crowded on one end, also gives rise to conflicts. This problem can be remedied in two ways. The best way, provided the hallway is wide enough, is to place standing plants in the corners, as indicated by the arrows. Silk trees will do. The second way is to hang pictures of more or less subdued colors on the walls to the sides of the doors to calm the situation.
