What I am going to describe to you here is a secret method whose principles stem from the ancient Chinese military use of feng shui and are often implemented in architectural design by modern Chinese and Japanese commercial firms. The controversial Bank of China building in Hong Kong is an outstanding case in point.

The Bank of China building is a skyscraper whose upper parts are designed with triangular shapes, creating sharp, bold edges. When the building was completed, the consensus in Hong Kong was that it was a disastrous piece of architecture that boded ill for the future of the bank. Contrary to public opinion, however, the design is most ingenious. Viewed in relation to its surrounding buildings, the Bank of China building rises like fire in a forest. Most of the surrounding buildings are tall and rectangular, while the Bank of China building is distinguished by its triangular shapes. The rectangular shapes correspond to the element Wood. The triangular shapes correspond to the element Fire. Fire feeds on Wood. Wood supports Fire. This means that the Bank of China thrives on its environment in Hong Kong. Better yet, because the element Fire corresponds to financial speculation, it can be said that the Bank of China is destined to be a leader in investment banking and rise to great heights of power, not only in China but in all the world. Thanks to brilliant feng shui, the bank was given wings by the buildings surrounding it.

The principles used to support the Bank of China building can be applied to any professional building or place of work. They can also be used by individuals working in separate offices, cubicles, at desks in an open area, or in a home office. If you are the owner or CEO of a business, an executive or employee occupying an office, cubicle, or just a desk space, or if you work at home, you can use this method to advantage.

You will need to determine the following three things:

Identifyingthe Predominant Element of your Surroundings

Take a good look out the windows of your place of work, or go outside and look at all the buildings that surround the building in which you work. By noting the colors and shapes of the buildings that surround your place of work you will be able to discern which of the five elements is most present in the environment.

Buildings ruled by Water are black or have outstanding features that are black. Buildings ruled by Wood are green or light blue or have outstanding features that are green or light blue. Buildings ruled by Fire are red, pink, or purple or have outstanding features that are red, pink, or purple. Buildings ruled by Earth are brown, sand color, orange, terra cotta, ocher, or yellow or have outstanding features of these colors. Buildings ruled by Metal are white, gray, or silvery or have outstanding white, gray, or silvery features.

With this information, make a list. How many buildings do you see? What are their colors? What are their corresponding elements? Do any buildings appear to be more outstanding than the others because of size or architectural details? What is the color of the most outstanding or impressive-looking building? What is its corresponding element?

Now consider the buildings by their shapes and other significant architectural features. Buildings that have undulant architectural details or are made primarily of glass are ruled by Water. Buildings that are rectangular, skyscrapers with flat tops, are ruled by Wood. Buildings with pointed roofs, resembling inverted V’s, and spires are ruled by Fire. Buildings that are wider than they are tall and have flat roofs, or a row of relatively low standing buildings of the same height with flat roofs, are ruled by Earth. Buildings with domes or cupolas, or many noticeable round or arched windows, are ruled by Metal.

With this information, make another list. How many buildings of each shape and outstanding architectural detail do you find? What are their corresponding elements? Is there a building or group of buildings that appears to dominate the view? What is its corresponding element?

Now tally up your lists of the colors and shapes with their corresponding elements. Which element is predominant? If you have any doubts, look out the windows or go outside again. Does any one of the buildings catch your attention right away? If so, what is the element of its shape or color? If you examine the shapes and colors of the buildings in the surrounding environment carefully enough, you will be able to discern which of the five elements is most present.
