Dowsing with the Pendulum

Once you become comfortable with it, the pendulum can help you in all sorts of ways. You can use it when choosing tarot cards, for instance; shuffle the cards and lay them face down in front of you, then use your pendulum to choose which cards you should read. Put it in the search position over the first card, then ask ‘Is this card significant for me today?’ Move the pendulum, still swinging, over each card and choose the ones to which you get a ‘yes’ response. Make a note of the cards you’ve selected and how apt they are.

People who work with aromatherapy oils and Bach flower remedies often use pendulums to choose which oils to give their patients. You could do the same for yourself, although you should always check its suitability before using it.

If you’re undecided about which piece of music to listen to, or which video to watch, you can ask your pendulum to choose. Place one hand on the video or CD and hold the pendulum with the other. If you get a ‘yes’ response, are you happy with that?

Searching

A pendulum is a particularly valuable tool when searching for lost objects. Instead of turning the house upside down looking for your contact lens case (particularly inconvenient if yours lenses happen to be in it at the time), ask your pendulum to do the hard work for you. You can either take your pendulum into each room in turn or simply stay in one place and ask about each room in turn, mentally picturing each room as you ask about it. Once you’ve narrowed down the search; work your way through it systematically, watching the pendulum to see when it changes from the search position to an ellipse, and then finally into a circle.

If you’ve ever waited impatiently for a friend to arrive, you will know how irritating this can be. With a pendulum, however, this becomes much easier, because you can hold it in the search position and call out the hours — once it says ‘yes’ to a particular hour, you can then dowse to find the quarter-hour. .or even the exact minute.

You can dowse a map to find someone’s location, too. For-instance, if you know that they’re somewhere on the road between their house and yours, you can dowse that area on a map. Hold the pendulum in the search position, then move it gently over the area you are searching and watch its movements change. Experienced dowsers use this method to search for water, minerals, ley lines and many other things besides.

Finding Answers

Your pendulum can also be used to answer questions about your future, or anyone else’s for that matter. However, remember that you will have to detach yourself emotionally from the question in order to receive an objective answer. To do this, fill your mind with something neutral while waiting for your pendulum to respond. Sig Lonegren, the American dowser, suggests repeating to yourself over and over again, ‘I wonder what the answer’s going to be?’ — this will act like mental white noise. Don’t think about anything that could evoke an emotional response, such as your forthcoming holiday or what’s for supper, because the pendulum might react to that thought.

Most people find that they are more successful with some dowsing techniques than others, so don’t give up if you can’t dowse hidden objects, for example — you might be gifted at dowsing the answers to questions instead. Learn to enjoy using your pendulum and see which directions it leads you in, but, above all, remember that it is simply a tool that amplifies your intuitions and turns them into a visual message. You can find the answers without the pendulum, if you trust your intuition enough.
